Solid Wood Counter Stool
A counter stool that holds its own.
The Solid Counter Stool is an original KHEM design — three tapered legs rising into a sculpted hardwood seat, with a quiet geometric line you won't find in production furniture. The tripod stance is intentional. It sits flat on uneven floors, takes up less visual space than a four-legged stool, and gives the piece a presence that's structural rather than decorative.
Each stool is built to order in our Hudson Valley studio in five American hardwoods: walnut, cherry, white oak, hard maple, and ebonized ash. Every wood reads differently — walnut is warm and grounded, cherry deepens with age, white oak runs cool and quiet, hard maple is the brightest of the five, and ebonized ash is dense, matte, and graphic. There are no stains. The color you see is the wood itself, finished by hand with a single coat of Rubio Monocoat — a plant-based, food-safe hard wax oil from Belgium that bonds with the wood fibers rather than sitting on top of them.
Construction is precision joinery, hand-assembled and hand-finished in our studio. The seat is shaped from solid hardwood with a softened edge that's comfortable under the back of the leg. The legs taper from a wider shoulder at the seat down to a narrow foot — a profile that's engineered for stability without visual heaviness. Nothing is veneered. Nothing is hidden.
At 25" seat height, this is a true counter stool, sized to pair with a standard 36" kitchen counter or kitchen island. The 14" round seat is generous enough for everyday use without overwhelming the space underneath the counter. Three legs, three points of contact, a 17.6" footprint at the floor — easy to tuck in, easy to pull out.
Made to order. Built once, by hand, by people whose names are on the building.
